Michal Šimečka is the leader of Progressive Slovakia, a liberal political party in Slovakia and a member of the National Council of Slovak Republic. Between October 2023 and September 2024, Michal Šimečka served as the Deputy Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic.
Michal Šimečka was Member of European Parliament (July 2019-October 2023), Vice-Chair of Renew Europe Group and served as the first Slovak Vice-President of European Parliament (January 2022-October 2023). He was also a member of the civil liberties (LIBE) and foreign affairs (AFET) committees. In 2023, he was ranked the 14th most influential MEP of the 9th Parliamentary Term.
Previously he was Senior Researcher at the Institute of International Relations in Prague and advisor to the Czech minister of Foreign Affairs. He also served as an advisor to Members of the European Parliament and to the president of Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová. He holds a D.Phil (PhD) in Politics and International Relations from Nuffield College, University of Oxford. His academic research focused on the politics of the EU neighbourhood, EU institutional affairs and external action, and foreign policies of Central European countries.
Michal Šimečka lives in Bratislava with his spouse Soňa Ferienčíková, a successful performative dancer and laureate of Dosky 2024 award, and their daughter, Táňa.
